Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a blood thinner used to prevent internal blood clots, reducing the risk of strokes, pulmonary emboli (clots in the lungs), and deep vein thrombosis (clots in veins). It is commonly prescribed for patients with atrial fibrillation, a condition where the upper part of the heart “wiggles” instead of beating regularly, which increases the risk of clot formation. Xarelto is also used after hip or knee replacement surgery.

It works by inhibiting factor Xa, a molecule that triggers a series of reactions leading to the formation of fibrin, the mesh that forms the foundation of blood clots.

Xarelto is available in tablet form. The usual dose ranges from 10 to 20 mg per day.
