Why medical weight loss matters in Florida
Being overweight isn’t just about numbers on a scale. It’s about how those numbers impact your day-to-day life. For many Floridians, that means struggling with fatigue that doesn’t go away, joint pain that makes even short walks uncomfortable, or rising blood pressure that keeps showing up at every check-up.
Florida’s health data shows just how common this is. Nearly two-thirds of adults in the state are either overweight or living with obesity. According to the Florida Department of Health, 28% of adults are classified as obese, meaning they have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, and another 36% fall into the overweight category.
The risks that come with those numbers are serious. Conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers become more likely. Adults between 45 and 64 face the highest rates of obesity, but the trend doesn’t stop there. The CDC reports that 16.4% of high school students in Florida also meet the criteria for obesity, setting the stage for long-term health concerns.
Diet is often part of the picture, but the story isn’t just about willpower. Processed, high-calorie foods are cheap and everywhere. Healthy meals take time and money that many families don’t have. Stress, long work hours, and poor sleep only make it harder to break out of the cycle. For some, it’s not about eating too much. It’s about the body working against them.
This is where medical weight loss can change lives. GLP-1 medications like tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) and semaglutide (Ozempic®) help regulate appetite and improve how the body processes blood sugar. They’ve been shown to support meaningful weight loss, especially when paired with manageable lifestyle changes. But getting access to these treatments hasn’t always been easy.
How access to medical weight loss Is improving in Florida
Accessing medical weight loss care in Florida has become more convenient and patient-friendly, thanks to recent legislative advancements and state initiatives that support telemedicine services.
A shift toward medical care, not judgment
Obesity is a complex health condition, not a character flaw. It’s linked to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other challenges that can make everyday life harder. For a long time, many people faced stigma in healthcare settings instead of support. That’s starting to change.
Thanks to increasing awareness and strong advocacy from national groups like the Obesity Action Coalition to Florida-based organizations like the Florida Obesity Society, weight loss is being treated more like any other medical issue: with science, compassion, and real care options.
Consumer protection in weight loss programs
Florida’s Commercial Weight-Loss Practices Act (Fla. Stat. §§ 501.057–501.0581) sets forth specific requirements for weight loss programs, including those offered via telemedicine. Providers must:
- Offer a written, itemized statement of the total cost of the program.
- Disclose the actual or estimated duration of the program.
- Provide information about the qualifications of the staff overseeing the program.
- Distribute a “Weight-Loss Consumer Bill of Rights” to all consumers, highlighting potential health risks associated with rapid weight loss.
These regulations ensure that patients receive transparent, safe, and effective weight loss care, whether in-person or through telemedicine services.
Legislation that opens more doors
Florida is one of several states taking real steps to improve access to medical weight loss. Telehealth laws passed in recent years have made it easier to connect with licensed providers online, including for weight-related care.
Recent federal and state-level pushes, including the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, aim to expand insurance coverage for FDA-approved weight loss medications and counseling services. While this bill hasn’t yet passed at the federal level, Florida legislators and health departments are paying attention. In 2024, state officials expanded Medicaid pilot programs to support chronic disease management, including obesity, for more Floridians.
Florida’s approach to obesity care is evolving from outdated diets and one-size-fits-all plans to evidence-based medicine and ongoing support. It’s not perfect yet, but progress is happening.

Tips for managing weight loss
1. Build a routine that feels realistic
One of the best ways to stay on track with your medical weight loss program is to tie your medication to something you already do. Your daily habits can make it easier to stay consistent and turn treatment into a natural part of your day.
2. Eat to feel full, not just “less”
GLP-1 medications often reduce appetite, but that doesn’t mean skipping meals. Focus on foods that fuel you: lean proteins (think grilled chicken or eggs), fiber-rich veggies, and healthy fats like avocado or olive oil.
3. Expect off days (and don’t panic)
Some days you’ll feel super motivated. Other days, not so much. That’s normal. Remember, weight loss isn’t linear. If something feels off for more than a few days, reach out to your QuickMD provider for a check-in.
Support doesn’t end with a prescription. We’re here when you hit roadblocks, have questions, or need reassurance. That’s the kind of care that makes a difference.

Frequently asked questions about weight loss in Florida
Are there restrictions on getting weight loss medications online in Florida?
Florida allows you to start medical weight loss treatment online with a licensed provider. That means you can safely access medications like GLP-1s through telemedicine, without needing an in-person visit.
At QuickMD, we follow all state telehealth rules to make sure your care is legal, safe, and personalized. Whether you’re managing your body weight due to a family history of health concerns or you’re just beginning your weight loss journey, our dedicated team is here to help you achieve your weight loss goals.
Does Florida Medicaid cover weight loss medications?
Florida Medicaid does not cover weight loss medications. Drugs like Wegovy®, or others used just for weight loss, aren’t covered. You may have seen that Florida Medicaid covers Ozempic®, but it only does so for specific medical conditions like Type 2 diabetes and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with Type 2 diabetes and established heart disease.
However, it may cover weight loss surgery, like gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, if you meet certain health and BMI requirements. Some Medicaid plans also offer wellness support, like coaching or nutrition advice, depending on your coverage.
What is the Weight Management Pilot Program?
The Weight Management Pilot Program is a Florida state benefit that helps eligible state employees and their dependents manage their weight with medical support. If you qualify, the weight management program can cover doctor visits and FDA-approved weight loss medications, as long as you use in-network providers and stay enrolled in your health plan’s wellness program.
