If you’re looking into the difference between kratom strains, a kratom vendor’s website isn’t the place to get a straight answer. Below, we’ll walk through what actually drives the differences between vein colors, correct a few things the strain-name marketing gets wrong, and lay out the safety facts that apply to every strain out there.

Are red, white, and green kratom different plants?

No. Red, white, and green kratom all come from the same plant, Mitragyna speciosa. None of them is a separate species.

What actually makes the vein colors different

Two things drive the real differences between vein colors: 

  • How mature the leaf is when it’s picked.
  • How it’’s dried afterward (sun-dried, dried under UV light, dried indoors, or left to ferment before drying). 

Kratom leaf contains alkaloids, the natural compounds that produce most of its effects. The vein color mostly reflects how those alkaloids shift during growing and drying. 

Two alkaloids matter most here: mitragynine, the one kratom leaf contains the most of, and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a related compound found in much smaller amounts but is far more potent. We cover 7-OH on its own in our article discussing 7-OH effects if you want to learn more.

Younger leaves generally contain higher levels of mitragynine, which is linked to more energizing effects. Leaves that are more mature or dried longer shift toward more 7-OH, which is linked to more sedating effects. Even so, that’s a general tendency, not something fixed.

Alkaloid content varies quite a bit with processing, genetics, and the season a leaf was harvested in, so two products labeled the same color, even from the same grower, can end up chemically different.

Separate lab studies comparing drying times back this up: maturity and processing clearly move the alkaloid mix, just not in one tidy, predictable direction.

Red vs. white vs. green kratom: a quick comparison

This table reflects what users and vendors report. No clinical trial has tested red, white, or green kratom against each other for any of these outcomes. Still, the table can help show how the different kratom colors are commonly described and used.

Every color still carries the same underlying risk: regular use of any of them can lead to dependence.

Red vein kratom

Red vein kratom comes from more mature leaves that are often dried for a longer stretch, which generally means the alkaloid balance leans more toward 7-OH. It’s the color most commonly marketed for calm, relaxation, or easing physical discomfort, though these effects are not clinically proven.

White vein kratom

White vein kratom comes from younger leaves harvested earlier, which trends the balance toward more mitragynine. It’s usually marketed for energy or focus.  As with red vein, this is what users report, not something that’s been clinically proven.

Green vein kratom

Green vein kratom sits in the middle: leaves picked at a middle stage of maturity, with a more even mix of both compounds. It’s often described as a milder, “in-between” option compared to red or white. The same limitation applies here, too. That description comes from users and vendors, not a clinical study. 

You may also see kratom sold as yellow or gold vein; those usually describe a blend of colors or a specific drying method, not a fourth type of plant.

Which kratom strain is strongest?

There’s no reliable “strongest” kratom strain. Alkaloid content depends on the specific batch and how it was grown, harvested, and dried. It’s not on the color or the brand name on the package, so potency can vary a lot even between two products sold under the exact same label.

The real jump in strength, and in danger, comes from concentrated 7-OH products, not vein colors. The gummies, shots, and tablets you’ll find in gas stations and smoke shops contain far more 7-OH than what naturally occurs in kratom leaf. These products can be dramatically more potent than any leaf strain, and they carry a significantly higher risk of dependence and dangerous side effects. Why kratom strain names are mostly marketing

Names like Maeng Da, Bali, and Borneo are marketing terms, not scientific or botanical categories. They don’t guarantee where a product actually came from or what’s actually in it.

Kratom isn’t approved by the FDA and is largely unregulated in the U.S., so there’s no standard behind any strain name and no requirement that a seller test or verify what’s in the product. 

Sellers often attach specific effect claims, like energy, calmness, and pain relief, to a strain name to make it sound like a tested, approved treatment. It isn’t. Treat any strain name, and the claims attached to it, as marketing, not medical guidance. 

Are any kratom strains safe or medically approved?

No kratom strain is FDA-approved or proven safe, and the color on the label doesn’t change that.

All three colors work on the same opioid receptors in your body, and using any of them regularly can lead to dependence and withdrawal. Concentrated 7-OH products raise that risk further.

Frequently asked questions about kratom strains

What does ‘enhanced’ or ‘UEI’ kratom mean?

UEI stands for Ultra Enhanced Indo. It’s kratom leaf powder that’s had extra kratom extract blended back in to raise the total alkaloid content, sometimes to 5 to 10 percent by weight, compared to the 1 to 2 percent typical of plain leaf powder. Enhanced products are a separate category: whatever color the label shows, an enhanced or extract-boosted product is more concentrated and carries a higher dependence risk than plain leaf.

Does kratom color affect how risky it is to try?

No color is inherently safer. Vein color doesn’t reliably predict alkaloid content or effect, so there’s no version of kratom that removes the risk of building tolerance or dependence. If you’re considering kratom, especially while managing pain, anxiety, or opioid use, talk to a doctor first.

Is Maeng Da actually stronger than other strains, or is that just marketing?

Maeng Da is one of the most heavily marketed kratom strain names. It’s Thai slang loosely meaning “premium grade,” rather than a place or a distinct genetic variety, and lab testing has found no meaningful chemical difference between Maeng Da and other strains sold under different names and colors. If a Maeng Da product feels stronger, that’s more likely explained by dose, individual sensitivity, or how fresh a particular batch is.

Can you tell what’s actually in a kratom product before you buy it?

Not reliably. Kratom doesn’t go through the testing or labeling that FDA-approved medications go through, so the only real way to know a product’s alkaloid content is through third-party lab testing, and even then, testing standards vary by vendor. If you’re using kratom regularly and want a clearer picture of what you’re actually taking, bring it up with a doctor.

Does switching strains or colors help if you’re trying to cut back?

Is it riskier to mix different kratom strains, or to mix kratom with other substances?

Mixing kratom strains with each other mainly changes the alkaloid mix you’re taking in, not necessarily the risk in a predictable way. Mixing kratom with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other sedatives is a different story. That combination raises the risk of dangerously slowed breathing.
